PURPOSE:To improve the precision of the safe inter-vehicle distance by determin ing the safe inter-vehicle distance which is the minimum value of the inter- vehicle distance where a rear-end collision with a forward vehicle can be avoided if a vehicle brake is started in consideration of the friction coefficient of the road surface. CONSTITUTION:An automatic brake device detects the road surface mu, actual inter-vehicle distance LR, and vehicle speed V respectively (S101-103), and it calculates the safe distance LSF based on the maximum deceleration generated in response to the road surface mu, the time differential value DELTALR of the actual inter-vehicle distance LR, and the vehicle speed V (S104-106). When the actual inter-vehicle distance LR is shorter than the safe distance LSF, the brake pressure is automatically increased (S107-109), and a rear-end collision with a forward vehicle is automatically avoided.
