PURPOSE:To provide a catalyst for decomposing N2O which is capable of efficiently decomposing N2O contained in exhaust gas and excellent in durability by making at least one kind of noble metal selected from among ruthenium, rhodium and iridium, etc., carried on alpha-Al2O3 as the catalyst for decomposing nitrous oxide. CONSTITUTION:alpha-Al2O3 is immersed in the aqueous solution of chloride of Ru, Rh, Re, Os and Ir, etc., in a specified time and impregnated with these noble metals and dried. Thereafter alpha-Al2O3 is reduced by hydrazine, dried and then burned at 400-500 deg.C for 3-5 hours. The properly carried amount of noble metals is regulated to 0.3-2wt.% expressed in terms of metal. Rh, Ru and Ir are more preferably selected from among the noble metals. The optimum temperature is 300-500 deg.C wherein a catalyst for decomposing nitrous oxide shows activity for N2O. The catalyst obtained in such a way catalytically decomposes nitrous oxide contained in exhaust gas at low temperature with good efficiency. Further even when moisture exists in exhaust gas, the catalyst is made difficult to be affected thereby and has excellent peculiar effect. |
