The metallic can crusher consists of a hydraulic cylinder (5) which acts on a can placed between fixed (8) and moving plates to crush it into a flat disc. Each can is positioned between the two plates by a tipping safety shutter (17) which also actuates the crushing mechanism. The fixed plate has two insulated contact blades (15) mounted on it which detect the presence of a can in the crusher and allow the operating cycle to start. The lower support which holds the can in position while it is being crushed is set at a distance from the fixed and moving plates so that a gap (13, 14) is left at each end of the crushed can to drop out.
