The optical unit has a front diffuser glass (20) and a main lamp (26) with an open shell accommodating the lamp bulb (30) and fitting inside a housing (28). The lamp unit is ventilated by air drawn in through a hole (56) formed in the front glass beneath the main lamp and delivered through passages formed in the lamp unit. The air is carried below the main lamp housing in a moulded passage (60). This air passes over the top of the housing (42) for auxiliary lamps (52). A rubber hose (64) then carries the air to a tube (62) projecting from the base of the main headlamp enclosure, and also to an outlet that directs the air over an item such as the battery or an oil cooler that is usefully cooled.
