N-arylmethylene ethylene diamine triacetates, N-arylmethylene- iminodiacetates and N,N'-diarylmethylene-ethylene diamine acetates of formula (I) and their salts and metal complexes are used for cosmetic treatment, to protect against oxidative stress.In (I), Z1, Z2, Z3 = NO2, COOH, CF3, halo, R1, OR1, SR1 or NR1R2; R4 = H or R1; R, R1,R2 = H or 1-8C alkyl; X1,X2,X3 = C= or -N= but only one is -N= and this has no substit., Z5 = (a) -COOR or a gp. (b) or (c).(I) are new cpds., with the following exceptions: benzyl-, 3-aminobenzyl-, 3-nitrobenzyl-, 4-nitrobenzyl-, 4-fluorobenzyl-, 2-nitrobenzyl-, 3-nitro-4-chlorobenzyl- and 3-pyridylmethylene- iminodiacetic acids and benzyl ethylenediamine triacetic acid, and with the proviso that when Z5 = (c) in which X1,X2 and X3 = C and Z4 = H, at least Z1 or Z2 is not H and when Z2 = H, Cl, NO2 or CH3 Z3 is not H, when Z1 = OH and Z2 = OCH3.Daily dosage is 1-100 mg/kg.
