Driver cover integral horn switch with solid reinforcement structure

A cover (12) for an inflatable occupant restraint system (10) for a motor vehicle contains a slot (12h) in the upper wall (12e) thereof into which a thin or membrane type switch assembly (22) is inserted. The slot in the cover is positioned between a soft outer cover material (12f) (such as urethane, vinyl or polyester) and a solid reinforcement material (such as moulded thermoplastic material). The solid reinforcement material provides for the slot into which to insert the switch and also for positioning and support of the switch, and in addition, for another slot (12k) through which electrical leads (22a) to the switch are inserted. The solid reinforcement material also provides for cover strength, as well as the cover rigidity that is required to provide a reaction surface for switch actuation.
