Each cell (C1-C4) of the network contains one fixed base radio station (e.g. BTS1) and is divided into a number of concentric sub-cells (SC11 etc.), each of which is served by a different transceiver with constant transmission and reception parameters. To avoid co-channel interference the overlapping outer sub-cells (e.g. SC13,SC23) of adjacent cells do not utilise the same pair of HF carriers. The depicted embodiment shows how five channels (A-E) are sufficient for allocation among the 12 sub-cells of a network of four cells. ADVANTAGE - Received signal level within a sub-cell can fall only by less than 10 dB so that base stations need no technically complex dynamic regulation of transmission level.
