The roof lifting system is used while modifying a building, eg. turning a loft into an extra room. A set of actuators (6) are placed on the floor (2) of the loft and set to push upwards on the rafters and purlins of the roof. When the actuators have been put in place, the attachments of the rafters to the top of the walls (3) are released, and then the lift is commenced with all the actuators acting together. The top portions of the walls are then built up (4) to their new height, the rafters are attached to them and the actuators can then be taken away.
