Polyhydroxyalkylaminobetains of formula (I) are new. Z = reduced (oligo)glycoside gp. contg. 1-10 glycose units; R, R = H, or 1-18C (hydroxy)alkyl; and n = 1-2. Also claimed are the prepn. of (I) by betainising amino sugars by known methods, and (ii) aq. detergent mixts. contg. (I) and other anionic, non-anionic, cationic and/or amphoteric or zwitterionic surfactants. USE/ADVANTAGE - Useful for the prepn. of surface-active agents (claimed), e.g. universal washing agents, fine washing agents, hand rinsing agents, liq. soap, cleaning agents, disinfectants, hair shampoos and bubble bath mixts. (I) are readily sol. or dispersible in cold water, bio-degradable and processable to give low viscosity aq. concentrates.
