Coating process comprises giving a substrate first and second coats with pigmented lacquer formulations contg. pigment based on metal oxide-coated mica flakes (I) and then opt. clear coat(s). The particle size of (I) is less than 20 microns in the first coat and 20-50 microns in the second. Pref. the formulations may contain pigments contg. C black or pearlescent pigment. The pigment content is 2-6 (wt.)%; and the coating thickness 10-20 microns. USE/ADVANTAGE - The process is useful for coating metals (Fe, steel, Al, Cu, bronze, brass and metal foils), other metal-coated surfaces, e.g. glass, ceramics and concrete, wool, e.g. furniture, clay, paper, packaging materials, e.g. plastics containers, films, board or other materials used for decorative and/or protective purposes.
