Method and apparatus for the cancellation of stamps and printing of pre-programmable messages on envelopes (27). The apparatus comprises means for feeding a plurality of envelopes in singulated manner to a sensing means (15), which detect the leading and top edges of the envelope and trigger printing means which cancel the stamp and/or print on a pre-programmable message. The apparatus and method is of value when envelopes of different sizes, generally having the stamp in a common region, i.e. upper right-hand corner, as part of the plurality of envelopes are present.
