A machine for drilling hard material, e.g. stones, comprises a frame 1, Fig. 1, carrying a head 2 having a spindle 4 rotated by an electric motor 9, and vibrated by an electromagnet 11, one end 14 of the spindle engaging a recess 13 in the core 12 of the electromagnet, and the other end having a drill 6 in a chuck 5. Abrading material is used on the drill. In a modification, the drill is rotated by a jet of fluid imping- ing on a wheel rigid with the spindle. In a further modification, the head comprises a section 28, Fig. 3, having covers 29, 30, and the spindle is located in the head by bearings 38, 39, housed in diaphragms 41, gripped by the covers 29, 30, the bearings being lubricated by oil passing through a pipe 42 to an impeller 44 and thence to a discharge 43. The electromagnet 32 reciprocates a core 33 against the spindle 36. |
