The invention provides a protector and an article of sportswear using the protector. The protector is used to absorb and cushion impacts during sports activities and includes a cushioning pad for buffering external impact. The cushioning pad has an inner face adapted to be mounted over a garment and a plurality of spaced substantially parallel, rigid formations mounted on the outer face of the cushioning pad to protect the cushioning pad from being damaged by external impact. The cushioning pad includes a plurality of closed elongate air cushion chambers.
