LUBRICANT FOR HOT PROCESSING OF STAINLESS STEEL

PURPOSE:To prevent the seizing of stainless steel to a processing roll to obtain a product free from surface defects by using a lubricant. CONSTITUTION:The lubricant is a dispersion of 1-30wt.% iron hydroxide in a viscous aqueous solution. It may further contain 1-30wt.% iron oxide (a) dispersed therein, provided that the sum of the hydroxide and the oxide (a) being 2-30wt.%. The hydroxide and the oxide (a) each preferably is one in which particles with diameters of 10mum or smaller account for at least 90wt.% thereof. The viscosity of the solution has preferably been regulated to 10-500P with a polymeric thickener. This lubricant serves to cool the stainless steel and the processing rolls because the iron hydroxide at a high temp. undergoes an endothermic reaction to dissociate into iron oxide and water. Particles of the iron oxide yielded by the reaction are present at the interfaces between the steel and the rolls together with particles of the unreacted iron hydroxide and of the iron oxide (a) to oppose metal/metal contact. As a result, a product having good surface properties can be obtained through hot processing.
