To seal a cable junction, an insert is placed between two branch cables (42a,42b;55,56;56,101a,101b) of the junction, which is then enclosed by a heat shrinkable envelope (45,58,103). The insert has at least one insert part having a block (32,43a,43b,50,70,80,100a,100b,100c) of heat fusible material attached by one or more flanges (31,41a,41b,51,82,102a,102b,102c) of heat conductive material to the branch cables (42a,42b,55,56,101a,101b). The block (32,43a,43b,50,70,80,100a,100b,100c) lies between the branch cables (42a,42b,55,56,101a,101b) at least partially inside the envelope (45,58,103). Then when the envelope (45,58,103) is heated to cause it to shrink, the block (32,43a,43b,50,70,80,100a,100b,100c) fuses, thus forming a seal. For most sizes of branch cable, two insert parts may be used, but three or more may be used for large branch cables. The flange (31,41a,41b,51,82,102a,102b,102c) preferably has a tongue (33,61,81) extending into the block (32,43a,43b,50,70,80,100a,100b,100c) to assist heat conduction. |
