PURPOSE: To provide a new high power lamp which makes the use of mercury unnecessary. CONSTITUTION: Sulfur, or selenium, or either one compound of them is contained in a lamp envelope as a filler. The filler has a pressure of about one atmosphere at the operating temperature. An inert gas such as argon and xenon which makes starting of discharge easy may be housed in the envelope. Electromagnetic energy such as microwave is combined with the filler in a power density of at least about 50W/cc to form plasma of the filler and to emit light. The light obtained is distributed mainly in a visible light region, spectrum distribution is substantially smooth, luminous efficiency is high, and a color index is high. The envelope is capable of forming in an electrodeless type or an electrode type. |
