摘要
959,991. Bookbinding machines. R. C. SCHULER, and E. H. SCHULER. July 12, 1960 [Dec. 1, 1959], No. 24241/60. Heading B6A. [Also in Division B8] A method for applying sheet material to book backs, comprises feeding books to an endless conveyer while keeping the backs of the books disposed downwardly, applying a glue application roller to said backs, except at the leading and trailing edges of said backs, while the books are in motion, thereafter activating means for applying sheet material to said glued area while the books are in motion, and then delivering the back-sheeted books. Conveying means.-The books are fed backs downwardly along an exchangeable track 110 shaped to the contour the book backs, until two belts 7 take over the feed. The belts 7 feed the books to two endless chains 9. The latter comprise plates 52 having lugs 51, 59, projecting from their rear faces, between which rollers 53 are mounted. The rollers ride in tracks 55. One of said tracks 57 is slidably mounted on a fixed part 67 and is urged by a spring 63 towards the books 1 to grip them firmly between plates 52. The chain conveyers are mounted on castings 78, 80, 82, 84, and 70, 72, 74, 76, respectively. Castings 70, 72, 74, 76 are slidably mounted, so that the spacing between the chains may be adjusted by a spiral gear and screw arrangement 100, 90, and 97, 92, to accommodate different book widths. Endless belts 7 are provided at the delivery end of the machine. Glueing.-The glueing unit is adjustable transversely, to position it centrally beneath the book back and comprises an application roller 120 in contact with a brass pick-up roller 132 at all times. The roller 120 is air-filled and comprises a resilient rubber surface 122 mounted on a hub 124. The pressure of air in roller 120 is controlled by means of a valve 126, whereby the shape of the surface may be adjusted. Further, the construction of the roller 120 is such that the surface conforms to the shape of the backs of the books passing thereover. The rollers are rotated continuously by a gear 171 engaging intermeshing gears 174, 176, on the shafts of the two rollers. On actuation of two series connected switches 118, 119, by a book, a solenoid acts through linkage 168, 166 to rotate the roller 120 about the roller 132 against spring pressure, into the glue applying position. Release of the first switch 118 by the trailing edge of the book breaks the circuit to return the roller 120 to an inoperative position. By adjusting the positions of switches along the conveyer and relative to each other, the extent of glue coverage from one end of a book back to the other can be controlled. Crash applying station 10.-On operation of a switch 73 by a book, a solenoid 190 is activated to withdraw latch 192 and disengage a single cycle clutch 186 whereby the shaft 232 rotates. During the first half cycle of this rotation, a forming bar 222 and knife assembly 210 adjustably spaced apart along rods 230, are lifted and rotated about pivot 206 through co-operating cams 194, 196, cam followers 202, 204, and links 198, 216, and 200, to cut a strip of crash material from a roll and form it about the back of the book. The knife assembly 210 co-operates with a fixed knife 212. A rake 223 which is lifted by members 210, 222, during this movement, to press the material against the book back, is normally held just below the level of the crash material by means of studs 213, 215, fixed thereto and spring urged downwardly. During the final half of the cycle a crank 234 is activated and through a rack and pinion movement 236, 238, a one-way clutch 140 rotates feed rollers 148, 254, to feed the crash material below the conveyer ready for the next cycle. Back lining and head band station 26.-A strip of back lining and headband material 316,320 respectively, united by a glueing unit 321, is held on a platform 304 by pneumatic means. The platform 304, slidable on rods 313 forming extension of bar 311 pivoted to the machine frame, is lifted by links 305, on operation of solenoid 299 by a book engaging a finger 73, to press the strip on to the back of the book, the lifting movement breaking the vacuum in the pneumatic means. A second solenoid 278 operated at the same time unlatches a single cycle clutch and upon return of the platform to its initial position, feed rollers 295, 297, are rotated through rack and pinion movement 288, 290, to feed the material forward beneath the knife assembly 332. At the same time the platform is slid along rods 313 by linkage 302, cam arm 300, and cam follower 301, to a position beneath the knife to receive a strip of material cut off thereby. Rubbing-down station 16.-A pair of driven rollers 75, 77, constructed similarly to the glue application rollers and partially immersed in a water pot, smooth the backs of books passing thereover. Following the rollers are two rows of plastic fingers.
