The support structure has a layer of interlaced metallic filaments (1) coated with the catalytic material. The mesh construction ensures turbulent flow of exhaust gas, and thus improved chemical reaction rates. The wires are fixed rigidly one to the other where they cross. The fixing of the wires to each other can be by arc welding, by superficial oxidation or by use of an adhesive. ADVANTAGE - Reduces length of exhaust gas catalyser, reducing weight and cost.
