The cholesterylic liquid crystal dopant (III) [R=H(CH2)n; n=1-20 is prepd. by (a) dissolving 0.1 mol p-anisic acid and 0.2 mol 4,4'-dihydroxy biphenol into 40 ml pyridine, and reacting the mixt. for 12 hrs to obtain a cpd. (I), and (b) dissolving 0.07 mol cpd. (I) and 0.07 mol cholesteryl chloroformate (II) into 30 ml pyridine, and reflux reacting the mixt. for 8 hrs The dopant has a good miscibility with a nematic liquid crystal material having a biphenyl gp. and an ester gp.
