Novel nitrone compounds of the following formula are provided <IMAGE> (1) wherein R1, R2 and R3 may be the same or different and represent an alkyl group, an aryl group or a hydrogen atom, R4 to R8 may be the same or different and represent an alkyl group, a hydrogen atom or a carboxyl group provided that at least one of R4 to R8 is a carboxyl group, X represents an alkoxy group of the formula, R9O-, wherein R9 represents an alkyl group, a dialkylamino group of the formula, R10R11N-, wherein R10 and R11 may be the same or different and represent an alkyl group, or a hydrogen atom, and n is a value of 0, 1 or 2. A contrast enhanced material comprising the nitrone compound is also provided, which is able to enhance a contrast when exposed to light having a wavelength of 300 to 450 nm.
