The present application discloses herbicidal substituted-phenyl-1,2,4-Triazol-5(1H)-thiones and -ones, herbicidal compositions containing these compounds, methods of preparing them, and methods for controlling undesired plant growth by preemergence and/or postemergence application of the herbicidal compositions to the locus where control is desired. The herbicidal compounds are compounds of the formula <IMAGE> wherein: Ar is selected from <IMAGE> R is selected from haloalkyl; R1 is selected from alkyl; R2 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, haloalkoxy, haloalkyl, alkoxy, alkynyl, alkylthio, nitro, amino and cyano; R3 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkynyl, nitro, amino, mono- or disubstituted amino, cyano and hydroxy; R3is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, alkynyl, nitro, amino, mono- or disubstituted amino, cyano and hydroxy; R4 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl, trimethylsilylalkynyl, cyano, nitro, amino, haloalkyl, mono- or disubstituted amino, tetralkylammonium halide, hydroxy, alkoxy, phenoxy, benzyl, benzyloxy, alkylthio, alkylsulfonyl, alkylcarbonyl, phenylcarbonyl, pyrrolidinyl, piperidinyl, morpholinyl, alkylthioalkoxy, vinyloxy, alkylvinyloxy, halovinyloxy, allyloxy, cycloalkylalkoxy, cycloalkoxy, and haloalkoxy; R5 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl, alkoxy, haloalkoxy and haloalkyl; or R3and R4 or R4 and R5 may be joined to form -OCH2O-, -CH2C(CH3)2O-, -OC(CH3) (CH2CH3)O-, -N(CH2CH3)CH2CH2N(CH2CH3)-, -OCH2CH2N[CH(CH3)2]-, -OCH2CH2O-, -OC(CH3)2O-, -C(O)C (CH3)2O-, or -CH2CH2CH2O-; R6 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, alkyl and alkylthio; R7 and R8 are alkyl, not necessarily the same; and W is selected from S and O.
