917,622. Fermentation apparatus; fruit presses. MACKENZIE, J. May 28, 1961 [June 3, 1960; Jan. 11, 1961; April 28, 1961], No. 18541/61. Class 14 (2). [Also in Group I] The press (for separating liquids from solids) shown may be used for the separation of the liquid content from pulpy material such as crushed grapes by fermentation, with or without prior extraction of liquid by compression (see Group I). The container is closed in a pressure or air-tight manner. The contained pulp is then allowed to ferment and the gas thereby generated rises upwardly, carrying with it the suspended solids and permitting the purer liquid to accumulate at the bottom of the chamber. After the liquid has been drained off the solids remaining may be treated with a leaching liquid such as a lowquality wine, spent wash or water. Several presses and a reservoir tank for the leaching liquid may be arranged in series and the leaching liquid pumped therethrough in a closed circuit (Fig. 2, not shown). The presses may be connected in parallel instead of in series; the direction of flow of the leaching liquid may be reversed.
|
