A shaped green body, suitable for firing to form a zirconia based article of a desired shape, is made by (a) mixing the zirconium hydroxide and at least one binder to provide a formable mixture, at least one of said binders comprising a different zirconium compound which is thermally decomposable to zirconia; and (b) shaping the formable mixture such that subsequent firing thereof at a firing temperature greater than that at which said thermally decomposable zirconium compound is converted to zirconia will provide said zirconia based article of the desired shape. Preferably at least one further binder is provided. The fired article has applications as a catalyst, a supercatalyst, or as a catalyst support. The zirconium hydroxide is preferably dried before use, and the shaping may be by way of a twin screw extruder. |
