A surge diverter, for a gas insulated switching device, comprises (a) a closed box (2) filled with insulating gas; (b) a column (1) of stacked zinc oxide resistive elements located between a high voltage-side terminal (5) and an earth-side terminal (10), both terminals being located in the closed box; (c) potential-equalising rings (20,21,22) which are connected electrically and mechanically to the high voltage-side terminal (5) and which are arranged discretely along and spaced from the resistive element stack to encircle the column (1); and (d) an intermediate electrode (7) positioned around the column (1) at a location facing the potentional-equalisation ring (22) nearest the earth-side terminal (10). ADVANTAGE - Voltage distribution to the resistive elements is made uniform along the entire column length in the stacking direction.
