摘要 Sepn. of a mixt., comprising a conductive dispersed phase in the form of droplets in a weakly conductive continuous phase, is carried out in an insulating cylindrical chamber (1) contg. two or more helical parts (3,4) defining one or helical passages (a') for imparting helical motion to the mixt. The novelty comprises applying a potential difference between the facing turns of the helical parts to create an electric field which promotes coalescence of the dispersed phase droplets and flow of the mixt. along the passage(s), resulting in rotational motion during which the coalesced droplets accumulate without re-dispersion and partially separate from the continuous phase by relative displacement. Also claimed are (i) appts. for carrying out the above process or parts for sepn. of a mixt., e.g. petroleum, in which the continuous phase is an organic phase and the dispersed phase is a brine. USE/ADVANTAGE - Esp. for brine and water removal from crude oil prior to transportation. The use of combined electro-coalescence and rotational motion results in increased sepn. efficiency
