Failsafe parking brake for automatic transmission - has manual override to release parking brake if hydraulics fail

The automatic transmission has a parking brake with a claw engaging a gear wheel, operated by a spring loaded drive (3). This is normally held in the inoperative position by a hydraulic servo (1). A shaped groove coupling (5) and a slider (7) attached to the release linkage (8) controls the brake action. A release (13,14) pulls the slider into the released position and a recess in the groove holds the setting. Re-application of the hydraulic pressure resets the system for automatic operation. The manual release can be sited in the engine compartment etc. ADVANTAGE - The manual release allows the vehicle to be moved eg. for repair with a minimum of complexity.
