Digital magnetic tape recording with table of contents - held in PCM region accessed by entry of programme number from front panel for high speed search

Signals are recorded as digital data onto magnetic tape in the form of angled track segments formed by a helical scan process. Each track segment has a main pulse code modulated, PCM, section for the data. The contents of the tape are specified by a table of contents, TOC, that is recorded in the PCM region as an audio signal. Identification of the contents is provided by operation from the front panel when code signals are entered using push buttons. A playback jump control signal in a sub-code region of the track provides changeover to the table. The process may be used to search for specific items. USE/ADVANTAGE - Provides rapid identification of required programme sections.
