Magnetic contact-type, and non-contact-type card reader e.g. for access control - forms inlet to magnetic card reading station using slot located within wire loop antenna used for reading non-contact-type card

The data processing unit exchanges information with data cards of the contact (2) or non-contact type (13). The non-contact type cards are passed across the surface of the housing and transfer is made using a wire loop antenna (14a). In the centre of the loop is an entry slot through which the contact type card is inserted. This is a magnetic card that is passed by rollers (5) over a card sensor (6) and then successively to a read head (6) and write head (8). The system has a control unit (15) with a gating stage (12). Visual and audio signals (8, 16) indicate the type of card is use. USE/ADVANTAGE - Eg for cash dispenser, telephone and vending machine. Allows two types of card to be used for access control.
