Synthetic yarn is sized during a winding process. Equipment is provided on the machine to remove the yarn from the sizing, application at the time of doffing the full reel, so that a loose end is provided without size, which has sufficient grip to operate in the doffing mechanism. Pref. the spun filament yarn (F) is held on a supply reel (S) and brought around a direction change wheel (12). This is centred on an arm (16), holding the wheel in the bottom position, so that the yarn passes over a smooth fixed surface (20) which has a constant drip of size being applied to it. The size is taken up by the yarn in the correct proportion, and is then cross wound on another tube centre (24). At the time of doffing, when the reel (24) is full, the end is cut, and the loose end from the supply reel has to be held until another tube centre is fixed. ADVANTAGE - The loose end is not coated with size, so that suction will draw it into the tube and hold it.
