Refractory block for forming a regenerator grid consists of a wall-like base part (10) and two arms extending from the ends of the base part at an angle pref. of 30-90 deg. to the base part. The arms and base part are of equal thickness and arms are pref. parallel to each other. Block is of MgO, chromate, spinel, forsterite, Al2O3, mullite, chamotte, silica, ZrO2 and/or Zr silicate. ADVANTAGE - High thermal efficiency in both open and closed grids.
