New 2-pyrimidinecarboxylate esters are of formula (I): R1 = 1-15c alk(en)yl, opt. mono-substd. by CN or CF3 or at least mono-substd. by halogen, in which -CH2- gp(s). may be replaced by -O-, -CO-, -CO-O- or -O-CO without directly linked O atoms; rings A and B = (a) trans-1,4-cyclohexylene (Cyc), in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent -CH2- gps. may be replaced by -O- and/or -S-; (b) 1,4-phenylene (Phe), in which 1 or 2 -CH= gps. may be replaced by -N=; or (c) 1,4-cyclohexenylene, 1,4-bicyclo(2,2,2)octylene, piperidin-1,4-diyl, naphthalen-2,6-diyl, decahydro-naphthalen-2,6-diyl and 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl; gps. (a) and (b) may have CN or F substit(s).; Y = H, Cl or F; Q = -CF2-, -CF2-CF2-, -CHF-, -OCF2- -OCHF- or a single bond; Z1 and Z2 = -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH=, -(CH2)4- or a single bond; L1 and L2 = H or F; n, m and o = 0, 1 or 2 and n+m+o = 1 or more; if o = 1 and R1 and X = alkyl or alkoxy, L1 and L2 = F. USE/ADVANTAGE - (I) are used as components of liquid crystal (LC) media, which are used in LCDs and as dielectrics in electrooptical displays (claimed). They are esp. useful in displays of the twisted cell, guest-host, deformation of aligned phase or dynamic scattering type. (I) are stable LC or mesogenic cpds. with relatively low viscosity and high dielectric anisotropy.
