The invention comprises N-dialkylaminoalkyl monoalkenyl succinimides of the general formula: in which R is an alkenyl radical containing 30-200 carbon atoms, R1 is a divalent alkylene radical, R2 and R3 are alkyl radicals and R1, R2, R3 together contain a total of 3-10 carbon atoms. Preferably R is the radical of a polymer RH of an olefine containing 2-5 carbon atoms, the polymer having a molecular weight of from 420 to 2800. The succinimides are prepared by reacting an olefin, e.g. a polyolefin with maleic anhydride to form a monoalkenyl succinic anhydride and reacting this compound with a dialkyl aminoalkylamine. The first stage is preferably carried out at 300-450 DEG F. and the second at 220-500 DEG F.
