The illumination device has an opaque circuit board (10) which supports LED chips (16) controlled via associated conductor paths, and acting as the base of a housing defined by a frame supporting the illuminated display surface (14). The LED chips lie in rows parallel to one sidewall (15) of the housing, their light outputs overlapping in the plane of the display surface. The enclosed space defined by the circuit board and the housing sides is filled with a transparent material, acting as a light dispersive body (13).
