In a process to wash acid components out of waste gases by absorption, acid is washed out following cooling by a quencher to the cooling boundary temperature. The novelty is that (a) a washing fluid is passed briefly through two packed vessels generating a coherent film of fluid on the packing surfaces, over which the smoke gases move from bottom to top; (b) the raw acid produced is washed out when the required acid concentration has been reached, by a brief rinse with a new charge of washing fluid; (c) the first packed vessel is charged ready for a new absorption cycle with fresh absorption fluid, and the rinsed out absorption fluid is used as a washing fluid in the previous stage. ADVANTAGE - The process provides a simple and low-cost means by which acids can be recovered, for example from a refuse incinerator.
