A magnetooptical recording medium includes a substrate, a first magnetic layer formed on the substrate and having an easy axis of magnetization in a direction perpendicular to a layer surface, a second magnetic layer having a lower Curie temperature and a larger coercive force at room temperature than the first magnetic layer and exchange-coupled to the first magnetic layer, and a reflective layer formed on a side opposite to the substrate with respect to the first and second magnetic layers. When the recording medium is evaluated by performing a process of recording a signal on the recording medium by scanning the recording medium with a light beam modulated according to the signal while applying a DC magnetic field on the recording medium, reproducing the recorded signal by utilizing the magnetooptic effect, and detecting a CN ratio and noise level of the reproduced signal, while changing a direction and intensity of the DC magnetic field, an intensity of the DC magnetic field in a first direction in which the CN ratio is 0 is 75 to 230 Oe, an intensity of the DC magnetic field in a second direction in which the CN ratio is saturated and which is opposite to the first direction is 20 to 180 Oe, and a difference between a noise level at which the CN ratio is 0 and a maximum noise level is not more than 10 dB.

|
