The invention relates to a barn for keeping livestock, in particular for fattening pigs, according to the preamble of Claim 1, having a litter layer (11) which is provided on the barn floor (9) at a level of at least 30 cm and consists of carbon-containing litter material in small parts. Said barn is equipped with an air-channelling means with distributed air apertures, opening into the litter layer on the underside, or at least one ventilator (17) or a similar air-delivery means in the region of the barn floor (9) in order to provide favourable working conditions in the litter layer, with the effect of forming a self-composting bioreactor. A method of disposing of animal excrement with the aid of a litter layer (11) consisting of carbon-containing litter material in small parts and aerobic bacteria containing this is thereby also provided, in the case of which the litter layer is ventilated, with the aid of an air-channelling means on the underside thereof, in predetermined brief time intervals which reduce cooling of the litter layer. <IMAGE> |
