An air bag 1 comprises: an opening 4 formed in the rear face for receiving an inflator; vent holes 5 formed in the rear face; and reinforcing cloth patches 10 and 11 (fig.4) sewn by threads to the peripheral edges of the opening 4 and the vent holes 5. A refractory coating layer 16 is formed continuously on the inner face of the air bag around the opening and the vent holes for covering and thermally protecting the threads. The coating layer may be made of silicone or chloroprene rubber, and/or nylon or polyester resin, and may comprise a separate sheet sewn to the airbag.
