Method for determining the combustion characteristics of spent liquor that is formed in the manufacture of chemical cellulose pulp. In the method the combustion characteristics (relative drying time, relative pyrolysis time, relative coke combustion time and specific swelling) are determined with the aid of the relative proportions of the aliphatic carboxylic acids dissolved in the spent liquor. Use of the method is conditional upon first having determined for the spent liquor in question the best possible correlation between the relative proportions of certain acids and the above mentioned combustion characteristics of the spent liquor.
