The carrier bags are in a strip (18) which is on a roller (12). Two rollers (14) advance it towards a slot (9) near a scanner (5). One roller is joined to a coaxial gear wheel (15) engages on a gear wheel (16) rotating on a bearing. When a bag is pulled through the slot a rod (17), projecting outwards from the rotating wheel, turns. An electric contact (19), pivoting on the bearing, is held against a stop (20) by a spring (21). The rod brings it into contact with an opposite contact (22) which is connected to a till (3) by conductors (23).
