To change the bobbins in the creel of a twin-sided textile machine, where each operating row such as at the spinning stations of a ring spinner assembly has at least one inner and one outer row of supply bobbins, the doffer moves along the longitudinal line of the machine assembly against a stationary transport system, to exchange the bobbins between creel and transport line. The doffer moves along the line of the machine assembly after a bobbin has been taken from the creel and before a fresh bobbin is inserted into the creel. At the outer and inner rows of bobbins, the bobbin at the inner row can be held in a position for handling near the doffer, and only one such position is available for each pair of bobbins to cover one bobbin of the inner row and one bobbin of the outer row. The unit operates with a prepositioned bobbin transport, and has a suction system to extract any residual matter from a bobbin or the unit itself.
