The method uses detector and display stations (1,3,5,7,9,11,13) located along a motorway. Each station is capable of detecting the speed of leading and following vehicles (2,4), and displays a signal (A,B) which varies over a time period which is adjusted to the speed of the leading vehicle. Each station has a solar panel (6) to provide energy, a sensor (8) to detect vehicle headlights, and a luminous source (10) to warn following vehicles of the proximity of leading vehicles. The equipment is contained in a case (12) and may be clipped to the motorway barrier (16). ADVANTAGE - In bad visibility drivers are warned of proximity and speed of vehicles ahead.
