In appts. for cleaning and treating dirty water by electroflotation using consumable iron and/or aluminium electrodes, the dirty water flows through an electrolysis reactor with electrode plates forming a meandering passage, the long path lengths of which are formed by the parallel horizontal electrode plates. The novelty is that (a) the electrolysis reactor (4) has a narrow, long and high orthorhombic shape; (b) the electrodes (5, 6) are in the form of rectangular iron and/or aluminium plates, each with one end edge and both side edges tightly inserted in the reactor (4) and with the other end edge spaced from the reactor wall; and (c) either the reactor side wall is detachable to allow sideways removal and insertion of the electrode plates or the reactor front wall is detachable to allow withdrawal of the electrode plates (5, 6) together with the front wall from the reactor (4). USE/ADVANTAGE - For treating waste water contaminated with organic cpds. and/or heavy metals, e.g. from electroplating, printing, metal processing, cleaning,, repair and textile dyeing operations. The appts. has a simple design and allows extremely simple replacement of used electrode plates.
