3-aryl-uracil derivs. of formula (I) and their salts are new. In (I), W = -NR1-CO- or -N=C(OR12)- bonded to the ring N atom through the C atom; R1 = H, 1-4C alkyl, 1-4C haloalkyl, 3-4C alkenyl or 3-4C alkynyl, R2 = H or CN; R3 = H or F; R4 = H, or F; R4 = H, halo, or 1-4C alkyl; R5 = 1-4C alkyl or 1-4C haloalkyl; R6 = H or 1-4C alkyl; R7 and R8 = OH, 1-6C alkoxy, 1-6C alkylthio, 3-6C alkenyloxy, 3-6C alkenylthio, 3-6C alkynyloxy, (1-6C)alkoxy(2-4C)alkoxy, (1-6C)alkylthio(2-4C)alkoxy, 3-7C cycloalkoxy, 3-7C cycloalkylthio, (3-8C)cycloalkyl(2-4C)alkoxy; OPh, heteroaryloxy, phenyl(1-4C)alkoxy or NR9R10; or R7 + R8 = NR11 or NR13-NR13; R9 and R10 = 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, 3-6C alkynyl, 3-7C cycloalkyl, Ph, heteroaryl or phenyl (1-4C)alkyl; or NR9R10 = 1 4- to 7-membered ring, opt. contg. other heteroatoms (O, S or NR11) and opt. mono- or polysubstd. by 1-4C alkyl; R11 = H, 1-6C alkyl, 3-6C alkenyl, 3-6C alkynyl, 1-6C alkoxy, 3-4C alkenyloxy, Ph, heteroaryl or phenyl (1-4C)alkyl; R12 = 1-4C alkyl, 3-4C alkenyl, or 3-4C alkynyl; R13 = H, 1-4C alkyl, opt. substd. phenyl or heteroaryl. USE - (I) are herbicides useful for post- or esp. pre-emergence control of broad-leaved and grass weeds, esp. selective control n crops, e.g. rice, wheat, soya, oilseed rape, cotton and esp. maize, or total control on industrial land and in tillage-free agriculture (all claimed). Weeds controlled include Avena, Setaria, Sinapis, and Stellaria spp..
