A gas damper, fully lockable along its stroke, comprises a fluid filled piston-cylinder unit such that a groove (2) in the piston head (3) for mounting a sealing ring (1) has at least one recess (4) running along the piston surface in an axial direction. The recess takes the form of a flat, and extends from the groove to ne of the operating chambers (5,6). The base of the groove is deeper in the recess and the recess is located between the groove and the face of the piston (3) on the connecting rod side.
