The method for applying at least one hard wear-resistant layer onto grinding rolls (used for comminution of relatively brittle materials) uses build-up welding. A layer (3) is applied onto a shell (2) of a roll body (1). In the edge regions (4,5) the wear-resistant material is applied with the use of grid welding techniques to form patterns (7,7') with open pockets (6) for retention and compression of the material being ground. The material thus retained provides autogenous wear protection. The hard wear-resistant material in the edge regions (4,5) is applied in a regular zigzag form. Such patterns form a direct extension of the layer (single or multiple) covering most of the roll grinding surface, and they extend radially to a distance equal to the layer thickness. Alternatively, they extend into the material of the roll body (1). USE/ADVANTAGE - In mfr of grinding rolls used for comminution of minerals, ores etc. Wear-resistant layers on rolls are produced simply and reliably. Worn rolls are effectively restored to high wear resistance.
