The damping action of an automotive shock absorber controlled in dependence on load has a double-acting piston with piston rod extending outside, working in a fluid-filled cylinder. The latter has separate fluid passages, each with a non-return valve.A control slider in a passage in the piston rod, leading to both cylinder chambers, is movable in opposition to a return spring into the shut position, throttling the passage, and is subjected to fluid pressure at one end, dependent on load.
