PURPOSE:To execute automatic adjustment to the wanted density of a user and to form a high quality image by updating a reference density signal at the time of controlling the density of a visible image according to the history of a density adjusting button. CONSTITUTION:The toner of a quantity corresponding to the surface potential of a photosensitive body 106 is developed from the set parameters of the concentration of the toner 108, the rotational speed of the sleeve of a developing unit, etc., and stuck to the surface of the photosensitive body 106. Simultaneously, a toner image 118 is formed for the reference density patch 114 of a high density and a toner image 120 is formed for the reference density patch 116 of a low density. The concentrations of the toner images of these reference density patches are detected by a high density detector 126 and a low density detector 128 respectively and controlled so as to be equal to the reference density signal. When the set density is different from the wanted one of the user, a value adjusted by the density adjusting button 140 is stored in a reference density signal updating part 142 and reference high and low density signals are updated according to the value. |
