The switch has a rotary knob (1) with a disc (3) mechanically attached to its shaft (2) which incorporates angularly spaced characters (4) for indicating the selected switch setting. Each of the characters is transparent and is selectively illuminated by a rear light source, the illuminated character viewed via a window (6) in a screen (5) lying in front of the disc. A switch (9) is mechanically coupled to the rotary knob and electrically coupled to the light source for controlling the latter in dependence on the selected setting and temporarily switching the light source off when the knob is being moved between 2 different settings.
