An x-ray source for use in an electron spectrometer comprises a cathode filament (23), focussing means (28,29) and a target (24) which is part of the vacuum chamber housing (10) of the electron spectrometer. The housing (10) itself acts as an anode. By forming the target as part of the vacuum housing, the spectrometer may be more economically and compactly constructed. The target may also comprise part of the energy analysing system associated with the spectrometer. <IMAGE>
