A countershaft automatic transmission for vehicular use is disclosed. The transmission has four forward gears which operate using two preferably friction clutches 24, 24' and two dual synchronizers 60, 62. The two friction clutches 24, 24' are mounted on a main shaft 14 with associated gear clusters 20, 21 and the synchronizers are mounted on a countershaft 48 with associated mating gear clusters. Reverse gear uses another synchronizer 84 mounted on a lay shaft 80 with associated gearing. Gear engagement is accomplished by actuating a friction clutch after having shifted a synchronizer to select the gear to be engaged. The friction clutches 24, 24' are preferably mounted adjacent one another but may alternatively be mounted at opposite ends of the main shaft 14. <IMAGE> |
